2024 National General Assembly
Boort Ward Councillor Neil Beattie and I were fortunate to attend the 30th Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) National General Assembly in Canberra earlier this month.
The ALGA National General Assembly provides a platform for local government to address national issues and advocate to the Federal Government on critical issues facing the sector.
The assembly provides an important opportunity to meet and discuss issues affecting councils with Mayors, Councillors and senior officers from across Australia. It also provides the chance to meet with political leaders and bring to their attention issues affecting our region.
During our time in Canberra, the Murray River Group of Councils (MRGC), of which Loddon Shire Council is a member, participated in a press conference with Member for Mallee, Dr Anne Webster, and NSW Senator and Shadow spokesperson for Water, Perin Davey. The purpose was to highlight to the Federal Government that open market water buybacks will be disastrous for regional communities.

During the Assembly, more than 160 motions were put forward and voted on by councils. The motions covered various themes including intergovernmental relations, financial sustainability, roads and infrastructure, emergency management, housing and homelessness, jobs and skills and community services.
