It’s time to Walk to School

Published on 04 October 2018

Schools from Loddon Shire are joining hundreds of primary schools from across Victoria for a fun month of walking, riding and scooting to and from school as part of this year’s VicHealth Walk to School initiative.

The Walk to School program, which runs from 8 October to 2 November, is a free, easy and fun way for kids to learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, every day.

As part of the Walk to School program this October, the month will include activity days for schools across the Shire, including Boort, Wedderburn, East Loddon, Pyramid Hill, Inglewood, Bridgewater and Tarnagulla.

Health Promotion staff from Dingee Bush Nursing Centre, Northern District Community Health and Inglewood and Districts Health Service will attend the activity days to promote healthy eating and activity.

Walk to School month will also include colouring and photo competitions for primary school-aged children, which will run from 8 October to 2 November.

The photo competition invites parents/guardians to submit photos of their child or children walking, riding or scooting to school or their bus stop to earlyyears@loddon.vic.gov.au

First prize is a Razor Scooter, second prize a Garmin fitness tracker watch and third prize is a SportsPower voucher.

Parents/guardians should note that by submitting photos to the photo competition they are providing consent for their photos to appear on social media and newspapers for promotional purposes.

The colouring competition, which will be arranged through schools, will see students submitting a decorated shoe design, which will be displayed in shop windows across the Shire. Prizes for the colouring competition will be awarded to a winner in each year level from Foundation to Grade 6.

This year’s Walk to School program in Loddon Shire has been made possible through a $10,000 grant from VicHealth.
