Get your dancing shoes on for the Rock ‘N’ Roll Spring Dance!

Published on 05 October 2017

Put your dancing shoes on and party the night away to the sounds of the 50s as Wedderburn Community House holds its annual Rock ‘N’ Roll Spring Dance on Friday, 20 October.

Getting underway at 8pm and running until midnight at the Wedderburn Mechanics Institute Hall, the evening is part of this year’s Naturally Loddon Spring Festival.

“We’ve scored ourselves a renowned rock ’n’ roll band from Bendigo,” organiser Marg Van Veen said. “This year we’re very happy to have Slapback Jack and the Magic 8 Balls play. Hopefully this will bring in even more rock ‘n’ rollers to the event as they tend to follow bands.”

Mrs Van Veen explained that the Community House held two dances a year – a Masquerade Ball in May and the Rock ‘N’ Roll Spring Dance in October.

Mrs Van Veen described the Spring Dance as “predominantly rock ‘n’ roll with a splash of ballroom”.

“It was packed out last year. We catered for 80 but had 120 turn up – luckily we had plenty of food!” Mrs Van Veen said.

“Anybody can take part – the more the merrier. But it you want a table it is a good idea to book ahead.”

Mrs Van Veen said the event saw people attend from all over Victoria and interstate.

“We have people come from Sydney, Wangaratta, Gippsland, Melbourne, Ballarat and Bendigo. They come each year because they like the atmosphere, it’s very friendly, very relaxed.

“There’s a couple from Sydney who regularly take part in dance competitions. They love coming to our Spring Dance because it’s all so relaxed and friendly.”

Mrs Van Veen said the dances were held as a finale for dance classes.

“Ballroom classes run for 10 weeks early in the year culminating in the Masquerade Ball. After the footy, netball and hockey season is over the rock ’n’ roll classes run for four weeks ending with the Spring Dance. We are very fortunate to have the Jailhouse Rockers come up from Bendigo to teach the classes along with local teacher Dede Williams.”

Tickets for the Wedderburn Rock ‘N’ Roll Spring Dance cost $20 per adult and $10 per student. Tickets are available at the Wedderburn Community House or at the door. However, table bookings are recommended.

Supper for the evening is provided, with guests to BYO their drinks.
