Cheer a horse, search for gold, watch a woodchop or run for Mum: the options for family entertainment in Loddon Shire this autumn are rich and varied.

Or, to get away from the crowd, try wetting a line, dipping a paddle, pushing the pedals or walking a trail.

Autumn is a time of freshness and fruitfulness in the Loddon Valley.

Go canoeing or boating on the Loddon River at Bridgewater or the lakes around Boort or try fishing for golden perch or Murray cod along the river, at Cairn Curran or Laanecoorie reservoirs, or the Serpentine Creek at Durham Ox.

Council has developed a range of walking, horse-riding and cycling trails, while the Terrick Terrick National Park or Kooyoora State Park offers camping and picnic facilities.

Play at local golf and bowls clubs, explore your ancestry with local historical societies, browse through Inglewood’s packed collectables stores or Blue Eucy Museum and visit Water Wheel Vineyards.

The next Minelab Detector Jamboree is planned for March 11-12 in Wedderburn – a family-friendly weekend focusing on detector skills, gold panning, live music and town garage sales.

One week later, on March 19, it’s the Boort Pacing Cup, a colourful social day hosted by the oldest continuous trotting club in Australia.

The Eddington Vintage Sports Car Club Sprints, scheduled for March 25, sees everything from early 1900s roadsters to classics from the seventies testing themselves and their drivers in quarter-mile drag racing events.

On April 15, it’s Boort’s Easter Market by the Lake, while, on Easter Monday, the Rheola Charity Carnival will offer the same traditional country-style entertainment it has been staging since 1871.

The Bridgewater Mother’s Day Classic returns on May 14, with courses for walkers and runners in aid of breast cancer research.
