Down with the power lines and on with the journey

Seemingly overnight the main street has been totally transformed, teasing visitors towards a once hidden view of Mount Kerang.

Even if you’re familiar with the historic gold mining town, it could take you a moment to put your finger on the fact that it’s the removal of overhead power lines that’s opened the view.

Furthermore, it’s only the first of several “wow” moments ahead for the town, with Wedderburn’s $3.2 million streetscape improvement project.

Loddon Shire Councillor Gavan Holt, said while the streetscape appears to have literally transformed overnight, the installation of underground power lines was actually the result of at least three years planning and preparation.

“The process really began with us sitting down and talking to the community about ways to make their streetscape more functionally appealing and aesthetically pleasing,” Cr Holt said.

“From there we identified a number of things that could be done to make Wedderburn a more attractive place to live, work and do business.”

“It’s exciting to reach this stage of the project, and the talk around town is generally that it’s hard to believe what a difference removing the rather unsightly web of power lines has made.”

“Improvements to footpaths, kerb and channels, drainage, paving and car parking are next in line.”

“Planning is also underway for landscaping work which we hope will take place between July and September.”

“While seeing the newly installed street lights switched on for the first time was a memorable moment, there’s more in store.”

“An absolute highlight of the program will be the planting of mature Chinese Elms which will line the main street, I expect that will be a comparable experience.”

Loddon Mayor, Cr Neil Beattie said residents living in other corners of Loddon Shire could rest assured they also had much to look forward to.

“This year Council is firmly focused on attracting funding to ensure several key streetscapes within Loddon Shire are brought up to scratch,” he said.

Master plans for the development of the main street, town entries and key township areas in Bridgewater, Boort, Inglewood and Pyramid Hill are ready to view.

“The plans, which are currently open to public comment, are available to view online at www.abouttown.org and are also on display in key locations in each township,” Cr Beattie said.

“As the design process is nearly completed I would encourage interested residents and groups to have their say.”

“The feedback period will remain open until the end of February, with final master plans expected to be underway in March.”
