Boort Metal Sculpture Competition
Published on 19 September 2016
There’s a buzz building around Boort as artists of all ages apply the finishing touches to their entries in this year’s Sculpture by the Lake competition.
The annual contest, which challenges participants to transform scrap metal from farms into striking works of art, will again be held as part of the town’s spring show.
The competition is part of a broader community strategy to construct a metal sculpture trail around Little Lake Boort, boosted by the creations of annual workshops led by an accomplished metal artist.
There are now five sculptures around the lake – two from renowned Barraport identity John Piccoli and three resulting from the workshops.
Rod Poxon, secretary of the Boort Development Committee, said his group was working closely with the Boort Agricultural & Pastoral Society Show on this year’s competition.
“We will again be offering a total of $4,000 in prize money across four categories – open, local, Under 18 and people’s choice,” Rod said.
“The Under 18 section last year was very well supported and it’s been exciting to see our young people getting inspired.
“Last year was a great success, with about 35 entries coming from as far afield as the Yarra Valley.
“Our 2015 winner was Glenalbyn artist Warren Giles with his Ned Kelly figure and we’re now encouraging other local sculptors to offer their works for consideration.”
The Boort Show takes place on 8 October at Boort Park.
Competition entries are accepted until 7 October, with entry fees set at $20 for adults and $10 for juniors.
