Boort Carp Competition Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October

WET a line and collar a carp – that’s the invitation from Boort Angling Club as members put the finishing touches to their plans for this year’s family carp fishing competition.
Planned for the weekend of 17-18 October, the event is held on the shores of Little Lake Boort as part of the 2015 “Naturally Loddon” Spring Festival.
Club president Alan Wilson said the competition had been run twice before, “with a good roll-up each time”.
“Last year, we had 170 people arrive from as far off as Melbourne,” Mr Wilson said.
“We start about 8 o’clock on the Saturday morning and finish about noon on Sunday, with prizes for the biggest fish and biggest catch, among others.
“There’s an overall winner – that goes to the angler with the most carp caught – plus a big section for the kids, with their own prize list.
“We get very good support from local businesses in Boort, as well as others from Bendigo.”
Mr Wilson said the angling club had been active for many years, running monthly competitions and other regular get-togethers for its 50-60 members.
“There are plenty of carp in the lake – too many of them,” he said.
“In the old days, the water was always clear, but now it’s never settled because of them.
“The lake also has yellowbelly, redfin and tench, but they’re not the aim of this weekend.”
Entry to the competition costs $10 for anglers 16 years and over, camping is available and participants are asked to bring their own food supplies.
