Murphy Creek bridge funding welcomed
It was fantastic to hear the news last week that Loddon Shire will receive $350,000 towards replacing the timber bridge at Murphy Creek.
The funding for the replacement bridge, which is on Woodstock West Road (about one kilometre north of the Bendigo-Maryborough Road), is through the Commonwealth Government’s Bridges Renewal Program.
Loddon Shire will match the funding to deliver the replacement bridge. The current timber bridge has a low load rating, meaning that Council has had to decline a number of heavy vehicle permit applications. However, the completed project will see the road and bridge able to carry all classes of heavy vehicles.
I’d like to thank the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, and Senator for Victoria, Jane Hume for their joint announcement.
Wedderburn depot complete
In other pleasing news, it’s great to see the completion of the new administration office at the Wedderburn depot, with staff recently moving into the building.
The new building provides a comfortable working space for the staff and also has a reception and public entry area, two offices and open plan work stations.
The administration building is certainly an upgrade from the temporary offices, which were cold in winter and hot in summer, and were also shared with a storage area.
First rate instalment due end of September
Just a reminder that the first instalment for rates (for residents who choose to use this payment option) is due by Saturday 30 September.
Reminder notices have been sent out regarding the instalment. If you haven’t received your notice, please make sure you contact Council to ensure you pay your instalment by the due date.
There is a range of ways to pay your rates instalment. This includes online via secure payments on Council’s website (using your credit card), BPAY, Australia Post (in person, online or by phone), by mail or by calling in or phoning Council’s offices during business hours.
Remember, if you are having difficulties paying your rates instalment, Council has a number of options available; however it is important to talk to Council first. Please call Council on 5494 1200 during business hours to discuss payment options.
Australia Day awards reminder
Finally this week, just a quick reminder that nominations for the 2017 Australia Day awards close next Friday 6 October.
As I’ve mentioned in a previous column, now is the time to consider honouring those in our community who have given so much to our Shire with an Australia Day award nomination.
Nominations are now open for the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Group/Event of the Year awards.
Don’t forget that nominations are also open for the 2018 Community Service Awards. These awards recognise the outstanding contribution to the local community during 2017 or noteworthy service to the community over a number of years. An award is given for each ward (Boort, Inglewood, Tarnagulla, Terrick and Wedderburn).
Nomination forms and more information is available from www.loddon.vic.gov.au, calling the Wedderburn Council office on 5494 1200 or by contacting Shannon Brown on 0429 380 465 or emailing loddonausday@bigpond.com
