2018 Kooyoora Wildflower Show

Published on 21 September 2018

A reasonable winter has raised hopes of another bright and lively display this year, as the Friends of Kooyoora prepare for their 12th annual Wildflower Show.

Planned for 22-23 September at Inglewood’s Eucy Distillery Museum, the event features local native wildflowers, plant, book and local produce sales, a popular photographic competition (with all images captured within the Loddon Shire), guest presenters, free bus tours and local environmental group displays.

The show is part of the 2018 “Naturally Loddon” Spring Festival, comprising 14 family-friendly events spread across nine weeks.

This year’s Spring Festival also includes family weekends at Terrick Terrick National Park and Little Lake Boort, nature walks, an Open Gardens day, two town festivals, stand-up paddle-boarding on the Serpentine Creek, a spring dance and Boort’s annual metal sculpture competition.

The photographic competition falls into three categories – open, under 18 and under 12 – on the themes of native flora, native fauna and landscapes, with winners decided by popular vote.

Friends of Kooyoora secretary Michael Moore said the wet winter had been an encouragement to members.

“The reports I hear say the prospects for viewing wildflowers this year are looking good,” he said.

“This year, we’ll be focusing a bit more on the volunteers who work in the Kooyoora State Park and the conservation projects they are undertaking through static displays and information.

“I also act as president of the Wedderburn Conservation Management Network, but there are certainly other groups besides who are very active in the park.

“We’re also very keen to get schools involved in the photographic competition and hope to build up our entries in the junior categories.”

Friends of Kooyoora members expect to collect a wide range of examples of local wildflower species from local forest areas and on private land in the week before the event under permits issued by DELWP.

The show, which includes on-site catering, will be open from 10am to 4pm Saturday and 10am to 2.30pm Sunday.  Entry costs $5 for adults and $10 for a family, with children under 18 free.

“Last year, we had about 250 people coming through over the weekend,” Mr Moore said.
